The Urban League of Northwest Indiana, Inc., is one of more than 100 affiliates in 36 states and the District of Columbia, and has a services area including Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties. The Urban League Movement carries out its mission at the local, state, and national levels through direct services, advocacy, research, policy analysis, community mobilization, collaboration and communication. The City of Gary, where the Urban League of Northwest Indiana office is located is about 30 miles from Chicago. Gary is the largest city in Northwest Indiana with a population of the area served of about 741,468 (from the 2000 census). Four major universities are located in Northwest Indiana: Valparaiso University in Valparaiso (the largest private Lutheran University in the United States), Indiana University Northwest (IUN) in Gary, Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, and Purdue University North Central located in Westville. Along with several smaller colleges and universities in Northwest Indiana, these institutions offer a variety of degree programs in areas including business administration, engineering and engineering technology, law, education, computing and information technology, and the liberal arts. Additionally, North-west Indiana is proximate to numerous other universities elsewhere in Indiana and in the Chicago-metropolitan area.
Philanthropy is important in Northwest Indiana, which is the home of several foundations including the Legacy Foundation and the Lake Area United Way. The northern portion of Northwest Indiana is noted for its heavy industry. Gary, Portage, and East Chicago are home to major steel mills including the largest North American facilities for both U.S. Steel (Gary Works) and Arcelor Mittal (Indiana Harbor). Whiting is home to the largest oil refinery in the Midwestern U.S. operated by BP. Other industrial outputs include fabricated metals, transportation equipment and food products. This area is also noted for its spectacular parks, lakeshore beaches, and welcoming towns and cities. A Visual and Performing Arts Center, a symphony orchestra, and an active theater guild provide a rich cultural environment bringing national and international figures in the arts to Northwest Indiana on a frequent basis

Successful applicants for the position of President/CEO should hold a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in business administration, social work, public administration or an appropriate discipline, with a proven track record of leadership and management in community-based organizations and race relations with at least five years of senior non-profit or for-profit management experience. This should include experience in the development and implementation of social service programs, program evaluation, advocacy, public education, fiscal management, strategic planning, resource development, board and volunteer relations, community mobilization and collaboration, and personnel management. Additional qualifications include excellent organizational and communications skills, grant/proposal writing experience, and government/community relations’ experience. These are minimum requirements for the position of President/CEO. Prior experience within the Urban League Movement is desirable. >/B>
